Gender gap in innovative entrepreneurship
The report identifies five gender gaps in innovative entrepreneurship in Spain, starting with formal training in post-compulsory education. The next gap is at entry to the labour market: women are less entrepreneurial. For every man engaged in highly innovative activities, there are 0.36 women in the same situation (73,000 men and 26,000 women). Even if they have already decided to become entrepreneurs, there is still a gender gap in aspects such as the lack of access to finance for entrepreneurship and the differences in women’s and men’s self-perception of their own skills and knowledge, as well as the unequal public visibility and notoriety observed between women and men.
However, the report also gives cause for optimism. Although it is true, as we have seen, that there is still a significant gender gap in entrepreneurship in Spain, the differences are smaller in the younger population (under 35) and in the profiles of self-employed workers with a high level of education, where there are 0.8 female entrepreneurs for every male entrepreneur.
Opportunity cost
This report addresses the gender gap in innovative entrepreneurship qualitatively and quantitatively, highlighting its economic and social consequences. In this way, it estimates that the gender gap in innovative entrepreneurship cost the economy 5.3 billion euros in 2023, a figure that represents 0.43% of Spain’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
