Women as drivers of economic recovery in post-coronavirus reconstruction Reports published prior to COVID-19 highlighted two interlinked situations in which the opportunity cost is exponential at a time when society is being transformed by the impact of the pandemic.

Women during the COVID-19 pandemic

To address the multiple changes transforming society and now being accelerated by the coronavirus crisis, while guaranteeing gender equality, we must drive measures in the area of employment and joint responsibility in the home, such as supporting reform of working hours, working from home, and flexible schedules.

Women as drivers of economic and societal recovery

Reports published prior to COVID-19 highlighted two interlinked situations in which the opportunity cost is exponential at a time when society is being transformed by the impact of the pandemic.

The first indicates a loss of female talent which, in terms of opportunity cost, is draining the Spanish economy of potential which can be measured against national GDP.

The second places women in a leadership role in the societal changes occurring in areas such as transport, leisure tourism, digitalisation, and sustainability. Both situations represent an opportunity to foster the role of women in the processes transforming society which have been accelerated by COVID-19.

In the post-COVID era, the gender gaps that already exist in society cannot be allowed to widen; gender equality must become a priority and strategic focus to drive Spain’s societal and economic growth. We are faced with a challenge, but also a unique opportunity, and we must all join together to build a more prosperous, developed, and equal society.
